Welcome to The Santiva Islanders!
The Santiva Islanders is a non-profit organization providing social, recreational, wellness, and educational activities for all adult islanders.
We serve Sanibel, Captiva, and the surrounding area. Whether you are a year-round resident, part-time resident, or visitor, please join us for lots of camaraderie!
What’s in a Name?
The Santiva Islanders serve all adult islanders and visitors on Sanibel, Captiva, and the surrounding area. Who would have thought our community would be facing the aftermath of two recent traumatic events- the global pandemic and the massive destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Ian? More than ever, we need a strong and united family community that helps and supports each other. In 2023 the Surgeon General's Advisory published their findings on "Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation." stating the importance of social connection to reduce the loneliness, invisibility and insignificance people experience in our world today. This is an epidemic that globally impacts all adults, not just our seniors. For this reason, the Island Seniors have adopted a new name "The Sanitva Islanders" and we have expanded our program to serve ALL adults, regardless of age.
As many of you know, "The Santiva" was the last mail boat in a fleet of vessels to deliver mail, provisions, and passengers to Sanibel and Captiva, before the causeway was built in 1963. It traveled Pine Island Sound six days a week, regardless of the weather. The Santiva Islanders honor the vessel that traveled our waters to bring people together and insure a thriving community.
The foundation of The Santiva Islanders programming is based on recognizing everyone's need for human connection, support and acceptance- let's rediscover the joy of living- together!
