Signup for Our Flash Event Texts!
Don’t miss out on the fun—sign up for our Flash Event texts. “Flash Events” are last minute events that require no planning, reservations, or responses and aren’t on the Santiva Islanders’ calendar. They’re just something fun to do and we want to invite the gang along. It’s like texting a friend on Friday to say something like— “Hey—we’re going for burgers and brews at the American Legion on Sunday from 1:00—2:30. Come join us. “
No response needed. Just show up, or not. So far we’ve been to the American Legion and Breezer’s Tiki Bar.
Obviously, we can’t text all of our members. Plus, some members aren’t great fans of texts. Therefore, we are starting out small. If you want to be included in the fun, please sign up here.
Note: These texts will come from “Santiva Islanders” and will not allow anyone to respond, so you won’t get a million pings from everyone on the text string responding. We don’ t need or want to know who’s coming, but you’ll know one of the Santiva Islander gang will be there to greet you when you show up—could be two folks or twenty, but for sure, it’ll be fun. You can opt out at anytime.

Tuesday, October 14, 2025—Bicycling with Butterflies by Sara Dykman
Sara Dykman made history when she became the first person to bicycle alongside monarch butterflies on their storied annual migration—a round-trip adventure that included three countries and more than 10,000 miles. Equally remarkable, she did it solo, on a bike cobbled together from used parts. Her panniers were recycled buckets.
In Bicycling with Butterflies, Dykman recounts her incredible journey and the dramatic ups and downs of the nearly nine-month odyssey. We’re beside her as she navigates unmapped roads in foreign countries, checks roadside milkweed for monarch eggs, and shares her passion with eager schoolchildren, skeptical bar patrons, and unimpressed border officials. We also meet some of the ardent monarch stewards who supported her efforts, from citizen scientists and researchers to farmers and high-rise city dwellers
Tuesday, November 11, 2025—The Swamp, The Everglades, Florida and the Politics of Paradise by Michael Grunwald
The Everglades was once reviled as a liquid wasteland, and Americans dreamed of draining it. Now it is revered as a national treasure, and Americans have launched the largest environmental project in history to try to save it.
The Swamp is the stunning story of the destruction and possible resurrection of the Everglades, the saga of man's abuse of nature in southern Florida, and his unprecedented efforts to make amends. Michael Grunwald, a prize-winning national reporter for The Washington Post, takes readers on a riveting journey from the Ice Ages to the present, illuminating the natural, social and political history of one of America's most beguiling but least understood patches of land.
